Hydrogen Rich Water VS Alkaline Ionizer Water VS Alkaline Water

WHAT IS HYDROGEN WATER, AND WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE FROM ALKALINE WATER? LET’S DISCUSS IT

In this topic, we will thoroughly discuss hydrogen water, also known as Hydrogen Rich Water (HRW), and alkaline water, also known as Alkaline Ionizer Water (AIW), and what is the difference between it and mineral water, demineralized water (RO water). , hexagonal water, oxygen water, and others.

So, in this discussion, we will start first with water. Who doesn’t know this H2O, which is abundant outside and inside our bodies? 2/3 of the body also contains water, including blood, brain, bones, and many more.

So that’s why water’s function is essential for our body; research shows humans can survive without food for three weeks, but without water, humans can only survive 4-7 days. So it is essential to continue consuming water so your body stays hydrated.

Now, we review a little about this H2O. Water or H2O covers almost 71% of the earth’s surface, each molecule consisting of 2 Hydrogen Atoms and 1 Oxygen Atom connected by covalent bonds. So it’s so extraordinary how these two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom become one molecule/compound called water.

Before discussing the types of water, we will discuss something often heard but only some clearly understand, namely pH. pH stands for Power (Potenz) of Hydrogen, pH itself is an essential indicator in determining water quality.

In its most basic sense, pH refers to the negative logarithmic (log) measurement of the concentration of H+ ions in solution. The more H+ (Hydrogen Ions), the more acidic; the less H+ (Hydrogen Ion), the more alkaline (alkaline).

TYPES OF DRINKING WATER ON THE MARKET AND ITS pH LEVELS

Now that we know this H2O, we will review each type of water available around us.

1. Mineral Water (pH level ranges from 7.0 – 8.0)

As the name implies, the mineral content in bottled water includes magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, calcium, bicarbonate, sodium, sulfate, chloride, and fluoride. Bottled mineral water goes through a series of processes in its manufacture, including adding or removing carbon dioxide gas (CO2) or toxic materials such as arsenic.

2. Demineralized Water (pH range 6.0 – 7.0)

As the name implies, demineralized water is water that does not contain minerals. This type of water is obtained through purification processes such as distillation (separation of chemical substances), deionization (neutralizing positive and negative ions), reverse osmosis (purification), or other processes that are equivalent and safe to drink.

3. Oxygenated Water (pH range 6.0 – 7.0)

As the name suggests, oxygenated water is a type of mineral water that has gone through a processing process in such a way, then oxygen is added. In contrast to ordinary water, oxygen-containing water has more oxygen molecular structure.

It’s just that it’s different from hydrogen water, which is proven to have a therapeutic effect, water containing oxygen, still needs research and substantial evidence to be included in the therapeutic category. And keep in mind that both oxygen and hydrogen are gases, and gases have the effect of evaporating very quickly, so even if there is adequate oxygen in oxygen water, the evaporation will probably be faster than you think.

  1. Other Drinking Water

Of the three types of water above, there are still several types of drinking water, such as carbonated drinks, juices, and drinks made with flavors. However, the discussion regarding other drinking water should have been discussed further.

WHAT IS ALKALINE WATER, AND WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE FROM HYDROGEN WATER?

Alkaline Water (pH > 8.0)

Now that we know the four types of water above that are easy to find around us, we will discuss alkaline water. There has been a lot of discussion about the pros and cons of alkaline water, some claims show that consuming alkaline water can help overcome diseases, including cancer, but many also disagree due to insufficient research and several other reasons. Well, as the name suggests, alkaline water is water that has a water pH above 8.0.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States recommends a pH level of drinking water that is safe for human consumption in the range of pH 6.5 to pH 8.5. If the pH of the drinking water is within the recommended level, the water will not be harmed. Based on the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) and the Indonesian National Standard (SNI), the pH reference for Packaged Drinking Water (AMDK) can be called alkaline if it has a pH between 8.5 and 9.97, so it is clear how BPOM provides limits regarding alkaline water and High PH. Usually, some manufacturers of bottled water include written warnings.

Alkaline water itself can be processed in several ways, such as:

1. Alkaline Filter

The first way is to use an alkaline rock filter containing alkaline minerals such as magnesium, potassium, potassium, calcium, etc.

2. Magnesium Sticks

The second way is to use a magnesium stick which can increase the pH level of rocks that contain alkaline minerals.

3. Bottled Alkaline Drinking Water (AMALDK)

The second way is to use a magnesium stick, which can increase the pH level of rocks with alkaline minerals.

4. Alkaline Ionizer Machine

This last method is considered the most accessible and most stable because the pH setting of the water can be controlled based on the button that has been set (pH 6.0 – 9). Compared to the two methods above that use alkaline mineral filters, they can indeed increase the pH of water, but there are no standard limits regarding pH due to 3 reasons, namely:

  1. Rock that is easily degraded because it is continuously immersed in water
  2. There are no standards and limits regarding the pH that can be produced
  3. The result differs from one another due to the source of origin of the water used, the soaking time, and the resulting pH level may be too high than the limit, and the TDS level may need to be lowered.

An alkaline ionizer uses a membrane that separates H2O into H2 (Hydrogen Gas) and OH- (Hydroxide), OH- is the forerunner of alkaline water and can reduce oxidation (ORP); this ORP is often referred to in marketing language as an antioxidant. So it is clear that an excellent alkaline ionizer produces:

  1. Hydrogen Gas
  2. Alkaline pH water
  3. Neutral pH Water
  4. Acid pH Water
  5. Has stability and standards for water pH regulation
  6. Usually made in the form of a large machine (not portable) and has residual water from the disposal

ALKALINE WATER = HYDROGEN WATER?

As the name implies, an alkaline ionizer is a machine that produces alkaline water with hydrogen content. To better understand how an Alkaline Ionizer machine works, see the diagram below:

This is the difference between Alkaline Ionizer and PEM Hydrogen generator, as   the Molecular Hydrogen Institute reported.

“This technology has been around for decades. It uses an electrolysis process to produce hydrogen gas and alkaline water at the cathode and oxygen/chlorine gas and acidic water at the anode. The anode and cathode are separated by a membrane, which allows the separation of the alkaline and acidic waters.

Many people have reported the benefits of using alkaline water ionizers. Still, it was only in 2007-2010 that scientists and researchers understood that the therapeutic property of alkaline ionized water is hydrogen gas. Alkaline water ionizers are optimized and designed to produce alkaline water instead of hydrogen gas. There are three observations with this system:

Some alkaline water ionizers do not contain enough dissolved hydrogen gas, or at least the concentration is below the detection limit of 0.01 ppm. Some alkaline water ionizers can produce adequate levels of hydrogen gas. Still, because of their alkaline water production, the electrode tends to rise quickly, which prevents hydrogen gas from dissolving into the water. Therefore, without cleaning the system with citric acid or vinegar, the concentration of hydrogen gas can also fall below 0.01 ppm quickly.”

ALKALINE IONIZER IS NOT THE SAME AS A HYDROGEN GENERATOR (PEM)!

On this basis, why do Alkaline Ionizer Water and Hydrogen Rich Water have two different systems and ways of working if alkaline ionizer water can produce water with acidic, neutral, and also basic (alkaline) pH and hydrogen, but the therapeutic effect is only found in gas generated hydrogen?

In addition, the higher the level of base (alkaline), the hydrogen gas content may appear high at first, but in a short time, it will evaporate quickly; this is because the pH level is relatively high. This is in line with the explanation regarding the pH above, the lower the pH, the higher the hydrogen ions (H+), and the higher the pH, the lower the hydrogen ions (H+).

So it is very clear that Alkaline Ionizer Water is in addition to producing alkaline water but in the electrolysis process, it still requires Hydrogen and produces alkaline water with hydrogen content. But once again, the hydrogen content will not be as large and stable as a pure hydrogen generator.

Hydrogen Generator PEM pH Neutral

Compared to Alkaline Ionizer Water, Hydrogen Generator has a different technology. If in alkaline ionized water, H2O is separated into H2 and OH-, the technology in the Hydrogen Generator has a different way of working. Namely H2O is separated into H2 and O2 without producing OH- (alkaline) molecules; this is often what most people don’t know. Moreover, especially if the technology used is PEM, PEM will only produce pure hydrogen gas without changing the pH of the water; even if there is an increase, the result will not be significant (in the range of 0.1 – 0.5).

There are several ways to produce hydrogen water, but most importantly, the goal is to produce high hydrogen gas concentrations without changing the pH Of course, some units are designed better than others. Some of the better ones employ a special membrane in the electrolysis chamber optimized for producing hydrogen gas known as a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM). It is a technology that has proven so effective that it is now often used for mass production of hydrogen gas and has recently been used in hydrogen-rich water generators.

Although the use of this technology to produce hydrogen-rich water is still new, PEM technology is very advanced. Machines using this technology often have concentrations ranging from 0.8 to 1.5 ppm depending on the machine (as well as the time of day).

Most importantly, not all hydrogen generator systems produce levels of 0.8 ppm and above; some only produce 0.1 to 0.5 ppm. This is often the case because these units do not use PEM technology but instead use conventional alkaline water ionizer chambers.

CAN ALKALINE NEUTRALLY EXCESSIVE ACID CONDITIONS IN THE BODY?

The human body has a pH level between 7.35 – 7.45 in healthy conditions. The kidneys and lungs play a role in keeping the body’s pH levels balanced so that all body functions can work properly. For example, you will experience  alkalosis when your body is too alkaline . Conversely,  ascidity can occur when the body’s pH rises to become too acidic. Chaos in the pH value in the body can cause many risks of health problems.

According to  Prof. Dr. HMA Rindit Pambayun, Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Food Engineers (PATPI) Center, the human body is designed to balance the PH of every food and drink that enters it. “So our stomach regulates it so that the pH is the same as the surroundings, a pH of 2 acidity degrees (pH2) is made.

The degree of acidity 2 in the stomach is helpful in selecting so that all pathogenic microorganisms die, except for lactic acid bacteria. So that when it leaves the stomach, the food consumed will be free from pathogens. “If the food is too high in PH and is used as daily food, it is tough for the stomach to regulate. It is possible that the useful life of the stomach, which should be up to 85 years old, is due to having to regulate every anniversary at 45 years, it has run out.”

WHAT WATER pH IS SAFE FOR CONSUMPTION?

This is probably the most frequently asked question regarding the many Bottled Drinking Water (AMDK) products available. Is alkaline water better than demineralized water, and is mineral water better than alkaline water? Well, this is how the government, through the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) and also related ministries such as the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Industry, apply standardization for Bottled Drinking Water, which is as follows:

So in line with what has become a good standard of drinking water seen based on pH levels, TDS content < 500, and other parameters. Even this standard is in line with the standards of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and the WHO (World Health Organization). So both demineralized water, mineral water, and alkaline water, as long as they meet the standards, are just as good.

PROS AND CONS OF ALKALINE WATER

Even so, there are still some pros and cons regarding alkaline water, especially from claims that alkaline water can help cure cancer. But the most important thing is that research on the benefits of alkaline on the body itself is still very minimal and further research is still needed. Moreover, consuming water with a high pH can also have side effects. This can be seen from several manufacturers who have started to include warnings regarding high pH water, which can be seen on their product packaging.

ALKALINE WATER CONSUMPTION CREATES ALKALINITY IN THE BODY.

Because the body can regulate its pH levels, mainly because each organ has a different pH, the lungs and lungs, and kidneys are organs that play an essential role in regulating the body’s pH levels. Consuming alkaline water does not necessarily put the body in an alkaline condition. Moreover, water that enters the stomach will turn into acid immediately. The best way to get your body into a state of alkalinity is to:

  1. Consume nutritious food
  2. Consume fiber through vegetables and fruits
  3. No smoking
  4. Do not consume alcoholic beverages
  5. Diligently exercise regularly
  6. Consume water regularly
  7. Get enough rest

WHAT ABOUT HYDROGEN WATER?

So what’s the difference with hydrogen water? Now the fundamental difference between Alkaline Ionizer and Hydrogen Generator is that molecular hydrogen is a neutral molecule, meaning it doesn’t affect the pH level of the water. Even if there is an effect, the results are not significant to be able to increase the pH <0.5. This statement is in line with what was said by Tyler Le Baron, as Executive Director of the Molecular Hydrogen Institute, a non-profit organization that dedicates to the study of Molecular Hydrogen and publishes in journals that have examined more than 1,200 studies of more than 170 diseases.

MOLECULAR HYDROGEN THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS

So it is clear that molecular hydrogen is a neutral molecule and has no significant effect on the pH of the water, in other words, the pH of the final water = the pH of the initial water. In addition, molecular hydrogen has been shown to have therapeutic effects, namely high levels of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Why is it said to contain high anti-oxidants?

Hydrogen (H) is the lightest atom in the universe and has a molecular weight of 1,079 gr/molecule. In other words, Hydrogen Gas (H2) has 2 hydrogen atoms and a molecular weight of 2.158 gr/molecule. Hydrogen has selective anti-oxidants, especially to counteract hydroxyl radicals which can cause oxidative stress on body cells. Even when compared to vitamin C, known as the king of antioxidants, it has a molecular weight of 176 gr/molecule.

MOLECULAR HYDROGEN = ZERO TOXICITY

Because it is very light, molecular hydrogen is qualified to work at the cellular level and as an activator to activate NRf2. In addition, molecular hydrogen is becoming more and more researched. It provides potential results for several degenerative diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and metabolic syndrome and most importantly, molecular hydrogen has no side effects or zero toxicity, which means it does not cause waste or residue in the human body. , another case with vitamins, though.

RESEARCH STUDY ON HYDROGEN

Can consuming hydrogen water regularly help overcome disease, or maybe it’s just OVERMYTH? Research on molecular hydrogen has been carried out since the 1930s, but Dr. Shigeo Ohta 2007 found that molecular hydrogen brings therapeutic benefits with anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Since then, hundreds to thousands of studies have been carried out by individuals and institutions and revealed very significant results for more than 170 diseases. Most importantly, molecular hydrogen has no side effects and can be consumed by everyone.

In Indonesia, hydrogen water is still a new thing, but the trend is increasing along with people’s awareness of a healthier life. Several sites have also started to publish the benefits of consuming hydrogen water, one of which was reported by  Hydrolog.ex

How to Determine Safe and Reliable Hydrogen Products?

The hydrogen generator uses an electrolysis method which ionizes water using plates made of Titanium (Ti) and Platinum (Pt); these two materials are mandatory to protect the metal from corrosion which can be caused by water. In addition, the membrane used can only filter Hydrogen Ions (H+), so that it only produces pure hydrogen gas without significantly changing the pH of the water and, no less significantly, it is MANDATORY to use SPE (Solid Polymer Electrolysis) and PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) technology.
